Negotiation tips and strategies
• You don’t have to give an answer straight away. Go away and think about it.
• Think about the outcome you want. Set a goal.
• Try to negotiate without emailing. Call and discuss. This is more personal. Writing is to confirm what has been talked about or decided. This should also save you time and makes sure that the agent is actually listening to you.
• Refer to the higher power. If you are one of the decision makers let the person that you are negotiating with know that. It also takes away the bad guy tag.
• Think about how the other side feels.
• Try to create a win/win situation.
• Give the other side some options.
• It is not personal so do not take it to heart. Most of the time the the agent just want to get a deal across the line as see you as impediment this hapening
• Having a third party is a good idea. It can give you a different view on the situation and also make you look like you have a little more backing.
IF YOU FEEL LIKE FIRING UP AT SOMEONE – DON’T! This will only make the situation harder.
Be nice even when you don’t want to be and you get nowhere with aggression unless you can follow through with fact and action to back it up
